2019 Summer Season

Free performances: July 31 in Willmar at The Barn Theatre at 7:00pm

Live Music! Bad Jokes! And Real Stories!

A long running outdated radio show produced in the city and about rural Minnesota comes to town and finds a different reality than the one they’ve been describing. The residents of the town take over the show and produce a more appropriate version. A Prairie Homeless Companion is both humorous satire and serious look at housing instability in Southwest Minnesota.

Now the project is ready to be shared in full form with each community. Playwright Josef Evans created the script which was recently shared in staged readings throughout SW Minnesota with feedback from the readings used for further development. Partnership Art – a program of the Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership – sponsored zAmya Theater from Minneapolis and Placebase Productions from Granite Falls to create A Prairie Homeless Companion. Story circles were held in four Southwest MN Communities: Willmar, Marshall, Hutchinson, and Worthington.

The cast is a mix of zAmya Theater performers, many of whom have experienced homelessness as well as community members and musicians from the area.

There is room for more people interested in joining in the production. Only one community rehearsal required. If interested please email:  zamyatheaterproject@gmail.com

THE FOX ON THE FAIRWAY (Comedy/Farce) ~ The Fox on the Fairway takes audiences on a hilarious romp, which pulls the rug out from underneath the stuffy denizens of a private country club.

Filled with mistaken identities, slamming doors, and over the top romantic shenanigans. It is a furiously paced comedy that recalls the Marx Brothers classics. A charmingly madcap adventure about love, life and man’s eternal love affair with ....golf.

THE CURIOUS SAVAGE (Drama/Comedy) ~ Mrs. Savage has been left ten million dollars by her late husband and wants to make the best use of it, in spite of her grown-up stepchildren’s efforts to get their hands on it. Knowing that the widow’s wealth is now in negotiable securities, and seeing they cannot get hold of the fortune, the stepchildren commit her to a sanatorium hoping to “bring her to her senses.” In the sanatorium, Mrs. Savage meets various social misfits, men and women who just cannot adjust themselves to life, people who need the help Mrs. Savage can provide. In getting to know them, she realizes that she will find happiness with them and plans to spend the rest of her life as one of them, but when the doctor tells her there is no reason why she should remain, she hesitates to go out into a hard world where people seem ready to do anything for money. The self-seeking stepchildren are driven to distraction by their vain efforts to browbeat Mrs. Savage, but she preserves her equanimity and leads them on a merry chase. At last her friends conspire to get rid of her stepchildren, and through their simple belief in the justice of her cause, they enable Mrs. Savage to carry out her plans to establish a fund to help others realize their hopes and dreams.
